GHALILIVE TOUR 2024
We recently had the pleasure of working on a show that wasn’t just about music, but about telling a story that really hits home. The artist at the center was Ghali, an Italian-Tunisian performer whose stage presence goes far beyond simply singing his songs. He’s someone who uses every element around him to send a powerful message.
Show Designer Simone Ferrari from Balich captured the spirit of the project perfectly:
“Working with Ghali is complex, rewarding and rich in nuances; it’s an ambitious journey founded on the deep conviction that every element on stage must convey a message.”
In this show, the audience was taken on a journey, starting in what felt like a dreamscape and ending up in a deeply human moment. As Simone Ferrari puts it:
“From a minimalist and metaphysical space we touch down on the dunes of a tangible desert, traverse urban worlds, and take flight to see the Earth so distant it appears as a mere dot. Then we land again, crossing a Mediterranean laden with pain and shame to dock in the ‘new Italy’, sharing a message of hope with tens of thousands of people.”
Our role was to shape the lighting design. We knew we had to do more than just illuminate the stage—we needed to support Ghali’s message and bring that emotional journey to life. We arranged the lighting units along curved lines, giving the system an organic, flowing feel. We wanted a rig that could feel both elegant and powerful, something that could match Ghali’s voice and energy
In the end, it wasn’t about flashy tricks. It was about subtlety, strength, and making sure the lights helped tell the story unfolding on stage. Ferrari’s words sum it up:
“A complex stage production with Ghali at its heart — his message and his body exposed to sandstorms, tempestuous winds, flames, and clouds. His messages are brought to the stage with a courage unmatched in Italy… With humanity at the forefront, because telling the stories of those who save lives is, above all, a human act and then a political one.”
For us, working on this project was inspiring. It proved that when music, design, and performance come together with honesty and purpose, the result is more than just a concert.
